Triple success for borough gardeners
Gardeners from Newcastle-under-Lyme are celebrating a triple success after winning a coveted Heart of England in Bloom award for the third year in a row.
The borough has once again been declared overall winner of the regional competition's "small city" category at an awards presentation at Pershore, Worcestershire.
Newcastle representatives were also presented with a gold medal for the eighth year running.
And green-fingered residents from the Basford AlIotments Association wildlife garden were awarded with a certificate of merit.
"We are absolutely delighted to have been declared winners of this regional contest for the third successive year," said Newcastle Borough Council Leader Simon Tagg.
"It's the first time that we've scored a hat-trick since we first entered the competition nearly 20 years ago.”
Heart of England in Bloom judges inspected a range of features when they toured the borough in July.
"This accolade is a tribute to residents, community groups and borough council staff who have worked hard to create outstanding floral displays and sustainable planting schemes in all sorts of weather," said Cllr. Mary Maxfield, Cabinet member for culture and active communities.
The judges took a close look at gardens, parks and community projects when they toured the area.
The borough is also in the running for the national Britain in Bloom '"small city" title, with the results of that competition due later this month (September).
The borough council also struck gold at this year's Royal Horticultural Society’s national flower bed contest at Tatton Park, Cheshire, with a floral display focusing on the honey bee.
